Motorways in UK: A1 (M)


The A1(M) motorway, upgrading sections of the A1 road, connects the capital of England with the capital of Scotland. 

The A1 is the longest numbered road in the United Kingdom, with 660 kilometers (410 miles) from London to Edinburgh. A1 passes through North London, Hatfield, Welwyn Garden City, Stevenage, Letchworth, Huntingdon, Peterborough, Grantham, Newark-upon-Trent, Retford, Doncaster, Leeds, York, Ripon, Darlington, Gateshead, Newcastle upon Tyne and Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The Doncaster Bypass, the first section of the A1(M) motorway, opened in 1961, is one of the oldest sections of motorway in Great Britain.
The section of the A1 upgraded to motorway standard and known as A1(M) are: 
• M25 to Stotfold –23 miles (37 km) length;
• Alconbury to Peterborough - 14 miles (23 km) length; 
• Doncaster bypass - 15 miles (24.1 km) length;
• Darrington to Leeming - 34 miles (55 km) length;
• Scotch Corner to Gateshead - 30 miles (48 km).
