Motorways in UK: A3 (London - Portsmouth)

A3 connects London and Portsmourh, passing close to Kingston upon Thames, Guildford, Haslemere and Petersfield.

Known as Portsmouth Road it’s importance is reflected by the importance of the two cities connected by A3: London, the capital of United Kingdom, and Portsmouth, a significant naval port for centuries, that even today is the only British city with a population density higher than London (13.330 inhabitants for each square mile, compared to 12.910 inhabitants for a square mile, in London).

A3 has a very interesting characteristic: it’s one of the rare British motorways connected to no other motorway – the closest is M27, but it is not actually connected with A3.

A historic route, connecting London to the home of the navy, it has been turned into a motorway since the 1960s. Almost all the road has been built to dual carriageway standards. Apart from brief sections in London, the road travels from that city South-West and, after Liss, South-South-West.

One of its most interesting segments is The Hindhead Tunnel, part of the 6.5 km (4.0 miles) dual-carriageway Hindhead bypass that replaced the last remaining stretch of single-carriageway on A3.The opening ceremony of this tunnel was performed 29 July 2011.
